SUMMARY:Jonathan Bass\, pianist
DESCRIPTION:Virtuoso pianist\, Jonathan Bass\, brings his wide-ranging repertoire and talent to Ogunquit for the first time.  Jonathan enjoys a multi-faceted career\, and appears frequently throughout the United States and around the world as soloist and chamber musician.  Of his 1994 Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall debut\, New York Concert Review wrote\, “A technical presence to be reckoned with…soaring with a feeling of lyrical discovery.” \n“Bass is everything a pianist should be: encompassing technical brilliance without showiness\, musical and emotional depth\, careful thought and an architectural sense of structure. He has a huge dynamic range\, and what impressed me the most about his performance was his extremely delicate and controlled pianissimo\, probably the hardest thing to do well on the piano.” Christopher Hyde\, Maine Classical Beat \n \n Purchase Tickets\n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets to this performance are available three weeks before the concert date on this website. SUMMARY:BOSTON CHAMBER MUSIC STRING QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n \n \n \n \n \n In recent years\, OPA’s Chamber Music Festival has featured an on-going partnership with Boston Chamber Music\, which every year puts together a special ensemble for the Ogunquit concerts\, unique to OPA. \nThe players this year include  Omar Chen  Guey\, violin\, Peter Sulski\, violin\, Noriko Futagami\, viola\, and David Russell\, cello – three of whom have played for OPA before\, with Ms. Futagami making her Ogunquit debut. \nThe Program:\nBoston Chamber Music’s  program this year will feature Haydn’s String Quartet No. 63 in B♭major\, Op. 76\, No. 4\, (the Sunrise Quartet)\, a piece which evokes the rising of the sun and the stirring awakening of nature.  It was selected by Boston Chamber Music as  a fitting tribute to the Marginal Way Centennial\, which this year marks 100 years since the deed of gift of the scenic cliff walk to the town of Ogunquit by Josiah Chase. \nThe Haydn quartet is nicknamed “Sunrise” due to the rising theme over sustained chords that begins the quartet\, and is perhaps the most magical in all Haydn.  Featuring rising themes throughout\, it combines earthiness with sophisticated development\, blending  Hungarian or Balkan folk music with the composer’s natural elegance. \nBCM’s program will also include Mozart’s Quartet in Eb Major\, K. 171 (the Viennese).  Written in 1773\, the quartet represents a considerable advance from Mozart’s previous works and reflects the influence of Haydn. \nCrisantemi    (Chrysanthemums)\, a haunting lovely elegy written by Giacomo Puccini in 1890 in tribute to the late Amadeo I of Spain.  Puccini later incorporated the beautiful\, tragic melodies of this short piece into his first successful opera\, Manon Lescaut. \nMendelssohn’s Quartet in Eb Major\, Op. 12 concludes the program.  This masterfully composed quartet of 1829\, while still echoing the influence of Beethoven\, features stylistic and lyrical departures from that influence as Mendelssohn continued to develop as a composer. \n \n \n \n \n \n The Players:  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Violinist Omar Chen Guey\n Violinist Omar Chen Guey has performed as soloist\, in recitals and chamber concerts throughout his native Brazil\, the US\, Europe\, Asia and Africa.  He is a prizewinner at both Tibor Varga and Lipizer International Violin Competitions.  A faculty member of Dartmouth College\, he is the assistant concertmaster of the Rhode Island Philharmonic\, a member of the Boston Ballet and the New England Camerata Trio. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Violist Noriko Futagami\n Violist Noriko Futagami performs with some of the area’s most celebrated ensembles.  She is a member of the Radius Ensemble\,  as well as working with the Boston Musica Viva\, Emmanuel Music\, Cantata Singers\, and Winsor Music on a regular basis.  She holds permanent positions in the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and Rhode Island Philharmonic\, and is principal violist for Albany Symphony. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Violinist Peter Sulski\n Violinist Peter Sulski was a member of the London Symphony Orchestra for seven years. While in England\, he served on the faculty of the Royal College of Music and Trinity College of Music and Drama\, as well as serving as Artistic Director of Chapel Royal Concerts which he founded in 1993. For seven years he gave the annual Viola Masterclass\, as well as many performances at the Dartington International Summer School. He made his Carnegie Hall Debut in 1999. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Cellist David Russell\n Cellist David Russell was hailed as a “superb cellist” in the Boston Globe\, and maintains a vigorous schedule both as soloist and as collaborator in the U.S. and Europe. He was appointed to the teaching faculty of Wellesley College in 2005 and currently serves as Director of Chamber Music. He is a regular performer with several Boston-area ensembles such as Emmanuel Music and Cantata Singers and Ensemble\, and served as Principal Cello with Opera Boston from 2005-2011. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Join us for this final chamber music concert of the season\, as these wonderful artists bring this superlative program to Ogunquit audiences! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n TICKETS

SUMMARY:17th Annual Piano Festival - Annual Student Piano Recital
DESCRIPTION:The Festival’s Student Piano Recital\, showcases up to 15 of the area’s best young pianists\, performing on Ogunquit Performing Art Committee’s famed Steinway piano. The recital provides these talented local students the opportunity to perform on a world class piano before a live audience in a beautiful setting. \nThe Piano Festival honors the memory of Elizabeth Dunaway Burnham\, founder and first chairperson of Ogunquit Performing Arts. A pianist herself\, Betty studied\, performed and taught piano for most of her life. She also saw to it that OPA acquired its spectacular Steinway Concert Model C Grand Piano\, which still remains OPA’s greatest treasure. \nThe Ogunquit Performing Arts Committee was Betty’s brain-child.  Her love of Ogunquit was matched by her love of the piano\, which she studied and taught for most of her life.  She long dreamed of the possibility that Ogunquit could support a program of musical performances to add to its attractiveness as a welcoming place for painters\, sculptors and summer theatre. \nWhen her father\, S. Judson Dunaway\, died in 1976\, his will directed that a portion of his estate be donated to charitable causes.  Betty requested that the executors include a contribution to Ogunquit to endow a fund to help support musical performances\, some to be held at the Dunaway Center\, which he earlier had donated to the town.  When this endowment was in place\, the Committee for the Performing Arts was formed and began its work\, with Betty elected as chairperson. \n \n \n \n \n \n Free admission for Student Recital  \nTickets to these performances are available on this website. . Tickets may also be purchased at the Cricket’s Corner Beach and Toy\, the Dunaway Center\, and the Ogunquit Welcome Center beginning three weeks prior to the performance. \nTickets: $20 in advance\, $25 at the door for both Weber and Hodgkinson concerts \nFree parking for the performances at the Barn Gallery

SUMMARY:17th Annual Elizabeth Dunaway Burnham Piano Festival - Janice Weber
DESCRIPTION:Janice Weber is a vivacious performer with a reputation for programing the most exciting and technically challenging selections – which certainly applies to her upcoming performance for OPA!  Her program includes works by Grieg and Liszt – a composer with whom she is particularly identified. \n“Ms. Weber is … a concert pianist of cliffhanging panache and daredevil brilliance.”  Ellen Pfeifer\, The Wall Street Journal \nHer world premiere recording of Liszt’s 1838 Transcendental Etudes elicited acclaim from Time Magazine: “Liszt later simplified these pieces into the still ferociously difficult Transcendental Etudes (1852 version) for fear that no one else could play them. There may now be several fire-eating piano virtuosos who can execute the original notes\, but few can liberate the prophetic music they contain as masterfully as Janice Weber does here.” \nMs. Weber recorded Liszt’s last Hungarian Rhapsody\, one of only two living pianists to be included in a compendium of historic performances by nineteen legendary artists. This disc subsequently won the International Liszt Prize. \nHer recordings also include Rachmaninoff’s complete transcriptions; with the Lydian Quartet\, Leo Ornstein’s vast Piano Quintet; flute and piano works of Sigfrid Karg-Elert; and waltz transcriptions of Godowsky\, Rosenthal\, and Friedman. \nHer Naxos recording of Leo Ornstein’s radical works introduced the charismatic composer to a worldwide audience. She is heard in Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time on Ongaku Records and her newest disc\, Cascade of Roses (Dorian Sono Luminus)\,features works of twenty-one composers from Adolf Jensen to Billy Mayerl. \nA summa cum laude graduate of the Eastman School of Music\, Janice Weber has performed at the White House\, Carnegie Hall\, Wigmore Hall\, National Gallery of Art\, and Boston’s Symphony Hall. She has appeared with the Boston Pops\, Chautauqua Symphony\, New Jersey Symphony\, Hilton Head Orchestra\, Sarajevo Philharmonic\, and Syracuse Symphony.   She has performed at the Bard\, Newport\, La Gesse\, Husum\, and Monadnock summer festivals and has twice toured China under the auspices of the American Liszt Society. \nShe was a member of the piano faculty at Boston Conservatory for twenty-seven years and has taught at MIT and New England Conservatory. \nMs. Weber is also a published author.  Her novels\, most of which have something to do with music\, have a worldwide following.  She also produced the tones for Ivory\, the worldwide bestselling virtual piano software. \nShe is a Steinway artist. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ms. Weber’s Program: \n\nPrelude and Fugue in E minor\, Op. 35 No. 1\n\nFelix Mendelssohn (1809 – 1847)\n\n\nLyric Pieces\n\nEdvard Grieg (1843 – 1907)\n\nTo Spring\,  Op. 43 No. 6\nMarch of the Trolls\, Op. 54 No. 3\nButterfly\, Op. 43 No. 1\nPeace of the Woods\, Op. 71 No. 4\nWedding Day at Troldhaugen\, Op. 65  No. 6\n\n\n\n\n\n Variations on a Theme of Corelli\, Op. 42\n\nSergei Rachmaninoff  (1873 – 1943)\n\n\n\nINTERMISSION \n\n St. Francis of Assisi Preaching to the Birds\n\nFranz Liszt (1811 – 1886)\n\n\nSt. Francis of Assisi Walking on the Waters\n\nFranz Liszt (1811 – 1886)\n\n\nHarmonies du Soir\n\nHungarian Rhapsody No. 12\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Tickets to these performances are available on this website. DESCRIPTION:TICKETS\n \n\n\nThe DaPonte String Quartet returns to Ogunquit Performing Arts after too long an absence.  Their performances for OPA go back to almost the beginning of the Chamber Music Festival in the mid-90’s.  A return engagement is long overdue\, and OPA together with the Barn Gallery are so happy to join together to welcome back the Quartet. \nOgunquit Performing Arts will celebrate its 40th Anniversary with a Champagne Reception following this performance. \nThe DaPonte Program will include: \nFranz Josef Haydn(1732-1809) \nString Quartet in C Major\, Op 20\, No 2 \nBéla Bartók(1881-1945) \nString Quartet No. 3\, Sz. 85 \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791) \nMozart Clarinet Quintet in A Major K. 581 \nGuest artist: Thomas Hill\, clarinet \n————————————————————————————— \n \nNot long after forming in Philadelphia twenty-one years ago\, the DaPonte String Quartet surprised the musical world by moving from a cosmopolitan urban area to rural Maine. The DSQ had been — and continues to be — sought after to perform and teach all over the U.S. and around the world. They have appeared in France\, Scotland\, Canada\, and more than twenty American states. Their performances have been broadcast over nation-wide radio and television programs in both the United States and Canada. They have received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Philadelphia Musical Fund Society\, the Music Teachers National Association\, Chamber Music America\, and have participated in several of the nation’s most prestigious concert series to rave reviews. Musicians and critics alike wondered\, why would the DSQ move to Maine\, where\, as the New York Times noted\, they create an experience “like watching the Celtics play in the local gym.” \nBut the members of the DaPonte String Quartet were proud to call Maine home\, and their relationship with mid-coast Maine remains a deeply rooted one. \nFerdinand “Dino” Liva (Violin)\nA violinist and conductor\, Dino comes from a musically prominent family in northeastern Pennsylvania. He began studying the violin at age seven with his father\, a noted conductor and teacher. Dino continued his education at the Peabody Conservatory with Berl Senofsky. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree\, he studied with Christine Dethier in New York and then attended Temple University\, working with Luis Biava\, where he graduated with a Master’s degree and a Professional Studies Certificate. He then spent four years as Assistant Professor of violin and chamber music at Wilkes University and as conductor of the University Orchestra. \nIn 1991\, Dino became one of the founding members of the DaPonte String Quartet and he moved full-time to Maine in 1996. Chamber music has remained his passion since those first rehearsals at the home of cellist Myles Jordan. The DSQ’s performances and workshops have been praised by members of the press and the quartet has worked with many important contemporary musicians\, including Marc Johnson\, Anton Kuerti\, Pamela Mia-Paul\, Rami Solomonov\, Tom Hill\, Mark Simons\, Jon Klibonoff\, Maria Bachmann\, Randall Hodgkinson\, and Marcus Thompson. Dino also continued to conduct and teach when he moved to Maine\, enriching the lives of young musicians throughout the Midcoast. \nLydia Forbes (Violin)\nLydia’s career has been guided by a singular intention — to delve as deeply as possible into the magic of great chamber music literature\, old and new. \nLydia has concertized throughout Europe and the U.K. with Ensemble L’Archibudelli\, Zephyr Kwartet\, Het Schoenberg Ensemble\, Sinfonietta Amsterdam\, Het Blazers Ensemble\, Osiris Piano Trio\, I Fiamminghi\, and Ensemble Explorations. During this time\, she recorded with some of the world’s most prominent labels; Sony Classical\, Harmonia Mundi\, CNM\, and for Vienna Modern Masters as soloist with the Czech Radio Philharmonic. She has also performed for festivals in Europe\, the U.K.\, Australia\, New Zealand\, and the U.S. Lydia has also served as concertmaster for Het Orkest van het Oosten in the Netherlands. \nMyles Jordan (Cello)\nMyles Jordan worked as a child actor for CBC Television and the National Film Board of Canada before taking up the cello. Inspired by the North American premiere of the second Shostakovich cello concerto and a Casals master class\, Myles asked for and received from his father a bright orange Hofner cello as a birthday present. He went on to train at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta\, the Britten-Pears School of Advanced Musical Studies in England\, and at Schloss Weikersheim in Germany. In 1981\, he won a Floyd S. Chalmers Foundation Award\, which enabled him to study at the Juilliard School\, and by 1983 he had earned two degrees there. From New York he moved to Philadelphia\, where he served as associate principal cellist of the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra\, completed a Doctor of Musical Arts\, and founded the DaPonte String Quartet. \nKirsten Monke (Viola)\nA native of Brunswick\, Maine\, Kirsten Monke received both her Masters and Bachelors degrees at Indiana University\, where she worked with Kim Kashkashian and Georges Janzer (of the Vegh Quartet and Grumiaux Trio). As a graduate fellow at UC Santa Barbara\, where she studied with Heiichiro Ohyama\, she was a founding member of the Anacapa String Quartet\, winners of the Fischoff competition as well as recipients of various honors from Chamber Music America. Following ten years of touring and concertizing with the ASQ\, Kirsten remained in Santa Barbara\, serving as Principal Violist of both the Santa Barbara Symphony and the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra. She also taught at the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, Westmont College\, and at chamber music workshops across the country. Kirsten can be heard in recordings with the Anacapa Quartet and the Santa Barbara Symphony\, as a soloist on a jazz CD featuring the music of Earl Stewart\, and as a member of the Gove County String Quartet\, a group that performs all original music.  Kirsten joined the DaPonte String Quartet in 2008. \n\nwww.dapontestringquartet.org \n\nTICKETS
