SUMMARY:25th Annual Capriccio: Paul Sullivan
DESCRIPTION: This is the featured 2nd night event for the Ogunquit Performing Art’s 25th Annual Capriccio\, a two-week long ‘Celebration of the Arts’ in Ogunquit\, Maine. \nGrammy Award winner Paul Sullivan has enjoyed a richly varied and distinguished career as a composer and a pianist. \nAccording to Sullivan “I was nominated as part of the Paul Winter Consort for our CD\, “Silver Solstice”\, which was one of the finalists for the “Best New Age Album” category. “Silver Solstice” is a collection of recordings made during our Winter Solstice concerts in New York over…several years. As a member of the band\, I played on most of the songs\, and was lucky enough to be featured in a solo performance of my own song\, “The Rising Moon”. \nIn his solo performances\, he creates a relaxed and intimate feeling with his audience through his pleasant and quirky observations about music and life. His warm and inviting personality\, coupled with his world-class musicianship\, wins over new listeners immediately and usually makes them life-long fans. \nAs a soloist\, with his trio\, and as a member of the Paul Winter Consort\, he’s played concert tours in most of the US and Europe as well as Croatia\, Israel\, Costa Rica\, and Japan. He’s performed among the dunes of the Negev Desert\, in Leonard Bernstein’s living room and on the stages of many of the world’s finest concert halls. He has also performed with some legendary orchestras\, such as the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy\, the Boston Pops under both Arthur Fiedler and Keith Lockhardt and several regional orchestras. \nAs a jazz player he has worked in some of New York’s most prestigious clubs\, including Sweet Basil\, The Village Vanguard\, and Bradley’s. He has played with a wide variety of jazz masters from Benny Goodman to Tommy Flanagan\, as well as Red Mitchell\, Lou Donaldson\, George Mraz\, Gerry Hemingway and many other luminaries. His 15 CDs have sold over 300 thousand copies and have won 3 Indie Awards. His music has been broadcast internationally\, as well as on all the major American networks\, including National Public Radio. \nIn the theater Sullivan has worked as a musical director\, pianist\, and conductor for many Off-Broadway and Broadway shows. He played keyboards and shared the conducting duties for the original production of the musical Nine\, which won a Tony Award for Best Musical. \nSullivan has also worked extensively in the dance world\, playing piano for Merce Cunningham’s classes\, writing music for the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall and has enjoyed a long friendship with the Pilobolus Dance Theater\, writing over 15 scores for them. \nTickets are $15 when purchased in advance\, $18 at the door and $5 for students\, and are available at: Ogunquit Welcome Center\, Ogunquit Camera Shop\, and the Dunaway Center. \nOnline Tickets available at: www.ogunquit.org/shop.php   \nBack to Capriccio Calendar of Events

SUMMARY:25th Annual Capriccio: Tim Sample
DESCRIPTION:The Maine Sunday Telegram referred to Tim as “Maine’s high prince of comedy…a one-man humor factory!” A concert by Tim Sample always guarantees a refreshing evening of laughter and fun for all ages. \nTim Sample\, the noted Maine humorist\, recorded his first comedy album in 1979. Since that start he has released many more albums and videos\, written/and or illustrated over a dozen books\, and brought Maine and his own brand of humor to the country at large through his 11 years as a regular correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning. “Yep” you might say “but what’s he done lately?” \nOn July 1st\, 2015 Stephen King announced in the New York Times the exclusive release of his new Audiobook “Drunken Fireworks” which Tim narrated in a “flawless Yankee accent” with regionalisms like “rud” for “road” and “pitcher” for “picture”…“I can hear that voice in my head because I’ve been listening to it my whole life\,” according to King. \nThroughout the summer Tim will be very busy promoting and signing the audiobook along with his ever on-going performance schedule. \nTim’s weekly column “Stories I Never Told You” turned out to be an excellent creative outlet for him and In 2013 it earned a First Place award from the Maine Press Association and in 2014 a collection of columns entitled “Answers to Questions Nobody was Askin’” was published by Down East Books. The audiobook version is in the works. \nTo quote The Reporter of North Conway\, NH: “Humorists such as Tim Sample…are doctors of the human soul. These are the ones…who keep our world whole.” \nFor more information on Tim visit his web-site: www.timsample.com \nTickets are $15 when purchased in advance\, $18 at the door\, and $5 for students\, available at: Ogunquit Welcome Center\, Ogunquit Camera Shop\, and the Dunaway Center. \nOnline Tickets available at: www.ogunquit.org/shop.php \nOPA is a not-for-profit\, tax exempt\, all-volunteer committee of the Town of Ogunquit\, Maine \nBack to Capriccio Calendar of Events

SUMMARY:Boston Chamber Music
DESCRIPTION:  \n21st ANNUAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL\nThe Ogunquit Performing Arts 21st Annual Chamber Music Festival includes Boston Chamber Music on Friday\, June 5 and The Cascabel Piano Trio on Saturday\, June 6 \nFriday\, June 5: Ogunquit’s favorite Boston Chamber Music returns for its 16th year of opening the Festival. Clarinetist and Artistic Director Thomas Hill continues to bring together the finest ensembles for this concert\, this year featuring mezzo-soprano\, flute\, and piano performing the works of Mozart\, Heiss\, Trimble\, Ravel\, and Saint-Saëns. \nSince the inception of Ogunquit Performing Art’s Chamber Music Festival in June of 1998\, there have been\, in all but two of the intervening years\, appearances of an ensemble offered under the rubric Boston Chamber Music. In reality\, the only annual consistent artist-members of that ‘ensemble’ have been pianist\, Randall Hodgkinson and clarinetist Thomas Hill — who has acted as the artistic director of the presentations.    The concerts’ participants\, however\, have been drawn heavily (though not exclusively) from guest-artist forces derived from the acclaimed Boston Chamber Music Society (of which Mr. Hodgkinson and Mr. Hill were founding members) and also members of the Boston Philharmonic of which Mr. Hill is principal clarinetist. \nThis year’s ensemble will include Mr. Hill\, Mr. Hodgkinson\, Kathleen Boyd\, flutist\, and D’Anna Fortunato\, Mezzo-soprano. \nTHE PROGRAM: \nParto parto ma tu ben mio soprano from La Clemenza di Tito by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart;\nLa Flûte Enchantée for soprano\, flute and piano by Maurice Ravel;\nUne Flûte Invisible for soprano\, flute and piano by Camille Saint-Saëns;\nSonata in g minor for flute and keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach;\nFour Fragments from the Canterbury Tales for soprano\, flute\, clarinet and keyboard by Lester Trimble;\nFive Songs from James Joyce by James Joyce for soprano\, clarinet and piano by the eminent Boston composer\, John Heiss. Mr. Heiss expected to be present in the audience.\nSonata for Clarinet and Piano by Leonard Bernstein \nPrincipal Clarinetist of The Boston Philharmonic since 1992\, THOMAS HILL was also founding clarinetist of the acclaimed Boston Chamber Music Society and a member of that ensemble from 1983 until 2010. He has appeared on innumerable concert and festival series\, and has been widely engaged as soloist and ensemble performer under a variety of auspices since the beginning of his career in New York and Los Angeles. \nMr. Hill has also served as principal clarinetist of The New Haven Symphony\, The Long Beach Symphony\, The Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra of Boston\, The Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra\, The San Diego Symphony\, and The Cascade Festival Orchestra in Oregon. He has appeared with both The Boston Symphony and The Boston Pops. \n“Hill’s performance was what we’ve come to expect from him –- beautifully controlled\, technically strong\, imaginative and musical.” The Boston Globe. \n…”among the best clarinetists anywhere.”   The Boston Musical Intelligencer \nRANDALL HODGKINSON\, pianist\, has achieved recognition as a winner of the International American Music Competition for pianists sponsored by the the Rockefeller Foundation. He has appeared frequently as soloist and chamber music artist in festivals throughout the United States\, and as a featured soloist with major orchestras including those of Philadelphia\, Atlanta\, Buffalo\, the American Symphony\, the Orchestra of Illinois and abroad in Italy and Iceland. His solo debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra was presented both in Boston and at Carnegie Hall. \nMr. Hodgkinson studied at The Curtis Institute and the New England Conservatory. He has been an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society since 1983. While a member of Boston Musica Viva\, he performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. \nFlutist KATHLEEN BOYD performs actively in Boston and throughout New England. She is the principal flutist of the Boston Philharmonic and Symphony New Hampshire. In addition\, she is a member of the Rhode Island Philharmonic\, and has performed frequently and toured nationally with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. \nPerformances include the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras\, Portland Symphony\, Alea III\, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra\, Landmarks Orchestra\, Emmanuel Music\, Cantata Singers\, New Hampshire\, Albany\, Granite State orchestras and others. She has participated in the Festivals at Tanglewood\, Bach Aria\, Grand Teton\, Sandpoint\, Monadnock\, Operafestival di Roma\, Newport\, RI\, VentiCordi in Kennebunkport\, ME and the Bach Festival in North Conway\, NH.\nGrammy nominated mezzo soprano\, D’ANNA FORTUNATO\, is widely considered to be one of America’s premier Concert/Oratorio singers\, while having established herself as a respected Operatic Artist as well. She has been a repeat soloist with North America’s finest Choral Organizations and Bach Festivals (Bach Aria Group member for 12 years and the Mezzo-Soprano Annual Soloist with the American Schubert Institute from 1991-2005).   She has appeared as a soloist in concerts with top major symphony orchestras\, including the New York Philharmonic\, The Boston Symphony\, the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, the San Francisco Symphony\, the New Japan Philharmonic\, Ottawa’s National Arts Center Orchestra\, and the orchestras of Dallas\, Houston\, Minnesota\, Cleveland\, Rochester\, and New Jersey. \n  \n\n\nFAMOUS COMPOSER TO ATTEND OPA OPENING NIGHT (Read More…)

SUMMARY:Classic Film: In Harm’s Way
DESCRIPTION:In Harm’s Way is a 1965 American epic naval war film produced and directed by Otto Preminger and starring John Wayne\, Kirk Douglas\, Patricia Neal\, Tom Tryon\, Paula Prentiss\, Stanley Holloway\, Burgess Meredith\, Brandon DeWilde\, Jill Haworth\, Dana Andrews\, and Henry Fonda. The screenplay was based on the novel Harm’s Way by James Bassett. \nThe film recounts the lives of several US naval officers and their wives or lovers while based in Hawaii as the US involvement in World War II begins. The title of the film comes from a quote from American Revolutionary naval hero John Paul Jones: “I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast\, for I intend to go in harm’s way.” \nAdmission\, parking\, and popcorn are free. \nThe book\, Harm’s Way\, is the definitive Admiral’s novel. The author\, James Bassett\, was a Public Affairs officer on Admiral “Bull” Halsey’s staff during WWII and his observations of that period are the basis for this novel. \nThe film presents a relatively unromanticized and realistic picture of the American Navy and its officers in the period before and shortly after the start of World War II\, complete with bureaucratic infighting among the brass and sometimes disreputable private acts by individuals. \nIn Harm’s Way\, was indeed an epic undertaking and Preminger was able to count on the US Defense Department for practically everything he needed in order to recreate the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and other combat scenes. The U.S. Navy “supplied him with the USS St. Paul\, a cruiser\, and sailed the entire cast and crew from Seattle to Hawaii. On the way Preminger shot a number of the onboard scenes\, ordering the St. Paul’s captain and crew around as if they were employees. The naval base at Pearl Harbor became a Preminger set…” (Jeff Stafford for TCM) \nIn Harm’s Way\, starring John Wayne\, Kirk Douglas\, Patricia Neal\, and Henry Fonda.  Free Admission.

Filipov comes up with a plan to reunite his former orchestra\, composed of old Jewish and Gypsy musicians – who also have been reduced to making a living as movers or taxi drivers – to perform in Paris and complete a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: The Razor’s Edge
DESCRIPTION:The Razor’s Edge is the first film version of W. Somerset Maugham’s 1944 novel. A Darryl F. Zanuck production\, it was released in 1946 and stars Tyrone Power\, Gene Tierney\, John Payne\, Anne Baxter\, Clifton Webb\, Herbert Marshall\, supporting cast Lucile Watson\, Frank Latimore and Elsa Lanchester. Marshall plays Somerset Maugham. The film was directed by Edmund Goulding. The book’s epigraph reads\, “The sharp edge of a razor is difficult to pass over; thus the wise say the path to enlightenment is hard\,” taken from a verse in the Katha-Upanishad.” \nThe Maugham best-seller\, in which Maugham himself is a character in the story\, is beautifully brought to life as a film classic\, which questions society’s values. This intriguing tale centers on a soul-searching World War I veteran (Power) who finds he cannot settle back into the world of the upper class. Shunning his planned marriage and conventional career\, he travels abroad to seek a more meaningful and enlightened life\, and causes his distraught fiancee (Tierney) to seek solace with another man (Payne). \nMaugham wrote the part of Isabel with his friend Gene Tierney in mind. Zanuck wanted Tyrone Power to star and delayed final casting until Power finished his service in the Marines in January 1946. \n20th Century Fox had purchased the film rights from Maugham in March 1945 for $50\,000 (equivalent to approximately $654\,991) plus 20% of the film’s net profits. The contract stipulated that Maugham would receive an additional $50\,000 if the film did not start shooting by February 2\, 1946. Therefore\, in August 1945\, producer Darryl F. Zanuck had the second unit begin shooting in the mountains around Denver\, Colorado\, which were to portray the Himalayas in the film. \nThe film was nominated for multiple Academy Award\, including Best Picture. Anne Baxter won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress; she and Clifton Webb both won Golden Globes for their performances.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Classic Film: Dead Poets Society
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to weather. \nDunaway Center\, 23 School Street \nIn “Dead Poets Society\,” Director Peter Weir (and screenwriter Tom Schulman) offer a touching private-school requiem for free thinking. Robin Williams gives arguably his best performance as the English teacher — who seeks to inspire individual creativity in his students\, and to show them that “somewhere among the three Rs is an immensely pleasurable P for poetry.” – The Washington Post \nPainfully shy Todd Anderson has been sent to the school where his popular older brother was valedictorian. His room-mate\, Neil\, although exceedingly bright and popular\, is very much under the thumb of his overbearing father. The two\, along with their other friends\, meet Professor Keating\, their new English teacher\, who tells them of the Dead Poets Society\, and encourages them to go against the status quo. Each\, in their own way\, does this\, and are changed for life. \nDead Poets Society won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay (Tom Schulman). Peter Weir received a nomination for Best Director and the film itself was nominated for Best Picture of 1989. Robin Williams received his second Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination and it has since been widely recognized as one of the actor/comedian’s best roles. It also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: Murder on the Orient Express
DESCRIPTION:Based on the 1934 mystery best-seller by Agatha Christie\, this stylish film stars Albert Finney (as Hercule Poirot\,) Lauren Bacall\, and the fabulous Orient Express itself\, – the elegant train carrying passengers in luxury and comfort from Istanbul to Calais. Joining them aboard is “the greatest cast of suspicious characters ever involved in murder\,” including Ingrid Bergman\, Jacqueline Bisset\, Sean Connery\, John Gielgud\, Wendy Hiller\, Anthony Perkins\, Vanessa Redgrave\, Richard Widmark\, and Michael York. \nEn route to Calais\, the fabled train is brought to a standstill by a snow slide in the Balkans. Its passengers include royalty\, the wealthy\, and the infamous.\, one of whom is murdered. The famous\, Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is also aboard\, and is begged by the owner of the line to solve the crime before the tracks are cleared and Yugoslav police become involved. \nAgatha Christie herself was once stranded on the Orient Express when the tracks were washed away in a mudslide. Her letters include descriptions of her fellow passengers\, who influenced the plot and characters of the book. At the center of Dame Agatha’s plot is the kidnapping of three-year-old heiress\, Daisy Armstrong\, an episode which the author based on the actual kidnapping/murder case of Charles Lindbergh’s infant son in 1932. \nDirected by Sidney Lumet\, the film richly evokes the era of Europe in the thirties\, and received six Academy Award nominations\, with Ingrid Bergman winning as Best Supporting Actress.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: Die Fledermaus
DESCRIPTION:*Waltz King Johann Strauss’ most popular operetta\, filled with familiar songs and waltzes; \n*Sumptuous production by London’s Royal Opera Covent Garden; \n*Evocative of the glittering opulence of Vienna’s Belle Epoque; \n*”A Summit of Escapism” – Daily Telegraph; \n*Free admission and holiday treats. \nKnown as the “Champagne Operetta”\, Die Fledermaus is the most brilliant and popular of any written by the Waltz King\, Johann Strauss. Major opera companies around the world frequently use it as their holiday presentation\, and symphony orchestras do likewise with its overture. \nThis lavish production was filmed for the BBC at a live performance on New Year’s Eve at the Royal Opera\, Covent Garden in London.   Its international cast includes Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Hermann Prey\, with Placido Domingo in the surprising role of conductor. According to the Daily Mail\, “Under (Domingo)\, Strauss’s zestful\, tuneful comedy fizzes along like musical champagne.” \nThe score is filled with familiar waltzes\, polkas and gavottes\, and the scenic design re-creates all the style and opulence of the Viennese Belle Epoque. The Daily Telegraph hailed it as “a summit of escapism!” \nA major part of the operetta occurs at Prince Orlofsky’s masked ball\, at which gaiety and champagne consumption is exceeded only by delightful confusion and mis-adventure. The Prince’s special gala performance party includes some surprise guests\, including Hinge and Bracket\, Charles Aznavour\, and the stars of the Royal Ballet\, Merle Park and Wayne Eagling\, performing a pas de deux especially choreographed for the occasion by Sir Frederick Ashton. \nDie Fledermaus was completed in 1874. Strauss was in his late forties\, the darling of Vienna for his celebrated waltzes. The operetta was his third attempt to compose a successful stage work. Cutting himself off from the world\, he completed the whole score in 43 days – a score of which nearly every bar is memorable and stamped with his own personality. With Die Fledermaus\, Strauss seems to have captured for us Vienna — an ideal\, laughing Vienna — and preserved it\, living\, in his music. This is the city as it liked to be in the third quarter of the nineteenth century.

DESCRIPTION:Ogunquit Performing Arts is proud to present the brilliant world-class pianist\, Janice Weber. A member of the piano faculty of Boston Conservatory and MIT\, Miss Weber’s concert\, entitled “Fire and Ice”\, features the works of Prokofiev\, Hindemith\, Kapustin\, and one of her specialties\, Franz Liszt. \nTime Magazine: “..Few can liberate (Liszt’s) prophetic music ..as masterfully as Janice Weber does here.” \n Tickets are $15 in advance\, $18 at the door\, students $5\, and may be purchased at the Ogunquit Camera Shop\, Ogunquit Welcome Center\, and the Dunaway Center. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.ogunquit.org/shop.php. \nHer world premiere recording of Liszt’s 1838 Transcendental Etudes elicited acclaim from Time Magazine: “Liszt later simplified these pieces into the still ferociously difficult Transcendental Etudes (1852 version) for fear that no one else could play them. There may now be several fire-eating piano virtuosos who can execute the original notes\, but few can liberate the prophetic music they contain as masterfully as Janice Weber does here.” \nA summa cum laude graduate of the Eastman School of Music\, Miss Weber has performed at the White House\, Carnegie Hall\, Wigmore Hall\, National Gallery of Art\, and Boston’s Symphony Hall. She has appeared with the Boston Pops\, Chautauqua Symphony\, New Jersey Symphony\, Hilton Head Orchestra\, Sarajevo Philharmonic\, and Syracuse Symphony in concertos of Hanson\, Sowerby\, Stenhammar\, Bernstein\, and Leroy Anderson as well as the standard repertoire. She has performed at the Bard\, Newport\, La Gesse\, Husum\, and Monadnock summer festivals and has twice toured China under the auspices of the American Liszt Society. \nHer recordings include Rachmaninoff’s complete transcriptions; with the Lydian Quartet\, Leo Ornstein’s vast Piano Quintet; flute and piano works of Sigfrid Karg-Elert; and waltz transcriptions of Godowsky\, Rosenthal\, and Friedman. Miss Weber recorded Liszt’s last Hungarian Rhapsody\, one of only two living pianists to be included in a compendium of historic performances by nineteen legendary artists. This disc subsequently won the International Liszt Prize. Her Naxos recording of Leo Ornstein’s radical works introduced the charismatic composer to a worldwide audience. SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Classic Film: The Three Faces of Eve
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to weather. \nThe Three Faces of Eve\, both a best-selling book and a major motion picture\, is the true story of a young housewife who suffered from multiple personality disorder (MPD). Her psychiatrists\, Corbett H. Thigpen and Hervey M. Cleckley of the Medical College of Georgia (later Georgia Health Sciences University) in Augusta\, published the book in 1957\, and a film adaptation was released that same year. Produced and directed by Nunnally Johnson\, a Georgia native\, the film featured another Georgian\, Joanne Woodward\, in the title role. \nTwentieth Century Fox purchased the film rights to the book at the urging of Nunnally Johnson\, who had obtained the galley proofs in 1956. While the book was still in press\, Johnson convinced the doctors to use the title The Three Faces of Eve and adapted the work as a screenplay. (Thigpen and Cleckley share writing credits for the film.) \nJohnson turned to a relative newcomer to Hollywood\, Joanne Woodward to play the title role. She had appeared in numerous television productions but had only two major movie roles to her credit when she was cast. Johnson considered Woodward’s own Georgia background to be a major asset in playing this fellow southerner. What everyone did agree upon was Joanne Woodward’s superb performance\, in which her masterful changes of facial expression\, voice\, and body language evoke the three personalities. She won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Actress.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: La Strada
DESCRIPTION:La Strada (The Road) is a 1954 Italian drama directed by Federico Fellini from his own screenplay co-written with Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Flaiano. The film portrays a brutish strongman (Anthony Quinn) and the naïve young woman (Giulietta Masina) whom he buys from her mother and takes with him on the road; encounters with his rival the Fool (Richard Basehart) end with their destruction. \nFellini has called La Strada “a complete catalogue of my entire mythological world\, a dangerous representation of my identity that was undertaken with no precedent whatsoever.” As a result\, the film demanded more time\, effort and suffering than any of his other films\, before or since. The development process was long and tortuous; it was extremely difficult to secure financial backing; casting proved problematic; injuries\, personnel changes and inclement weather disrupted the production schedule more than once; budget shortages constantly plagued the director and his production supervisor\, forcing them to take extraordinary measures to keep going. Finally\, just before shooting was completed\, Fellini suffered a nervous breakdown that necessitated medical treatment in order to complete principal photography. Initial critical reaction was harsh\, and the film’s screening at the Venice Film Festival was the occasion of a bitter controversy that escalated into a public brawl between Fellini’s supporters and detractors. \nSubsequently\, however\, La Strada has become “one of the most influential films ever made”\, according to the American Film Institute. It won the inaugural Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1956. It was placed fourth in the 1992 British Film Institute directors’ list of cinema’s top 10 films.
