SUMMARY:Classic Film: The Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Concert is a 2009 French comedy film by Radu Mihăileanu starring Aleksei Guskov\, Mélanie Laurent and Miou-Miou. It follows the farcical struggles and mis-adventures of a former world-famous conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre orchestra\, known as “The Maestro”\, Andrey Simonovich Filipov\, as he tries to re-claim his life and career. \nIt won the Best Original Score and Best Sound awards at César Awards 2010. It was also nominated for two Magritte Awards in the category of Best Co-Production and Best Editing for Ludo Troch in 2011\, and Best Foreign Film at the 68th Golden Globe Awards. \nAdmission\, parking\, and popcorn are free.   \nFilipov\, whose career was publicly destroyed by Leonid Brezhnev for defending Jewish musicians\, has been reduced to working as a mere janitor in the theatre where he once conducted\, becoming an alcoholic in the process. \nWhile cleaning his boss’ office he intercepts an official invitation from the prestigious Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris to replace a concert of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra that was canceled at the last minute. Filipov comes up with a plan to reunite his former orchestra\, composed of old Jewish and Gypsy musicians – who also have been reduced to making a living as movers or taxi drivers – to perform in Paris and complete a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.

SUMMARY:Live Performance: The Stillson School of Irish Dance
DESCRIPTION:The Stillson School of Irish Dance has an active show team which has performed throughout New England as well as on the Elipse lawn of the White House. They have been featured dancers accompanying such renowned Celtic performers as SOLAS\, CHERISH THE LADIES\, TRINITY DANCE COMPANY\, LIZ CARROLL\, BILLY MCCOMISKEY and MICK MOLONEY\, and EILEEN IVERS. \nIn existence for twenty years\, the school is the only certified school of Irish dancing in the state of Maine. The school’s dancers compete all over New England and place in the NEW ENGLAND REGIONAL IRISH DANCING CHAMPIONSHIPS annually. Dancers have placed in the North American Irish Dance Championships\, as well as competed in the All Ireland Championships\, The European Championships\, Great Britain Championships and The World Irish Dance Championships. Students of the Stillson School of Irish Dance are proud to have performed with Cherish the Ladies\, Solas\, The Trinity Irish Dance Company\, Natalie MacMaster\, and Eileen Ivers among many others. \nThe Stillson School of Irish Dance is under the direction of Carlene Moran Stillson ADCRG / TCRG. She is accredited by An Coimisiun in Dublin\, Ireland and a member of IDTANA. (Irish Dancing Teacher’s Association of North America) and The New England Region teaching organizations. \nThe Turning Point is a 1977 drama film centered on the world of ballet in New York City\, written by Arthur Laurents and directed by Herbert Ross. The film stars Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft\, along with Leslie Browne\, Mikhail Baryshnikov\, and Tom Skerritt. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards\, including Best Picture. The script is a fictionalized version of the real-life Brown family and the friendship between ballerinas Isabel Mirrow Brown and Nora Kaye. Isabel’s daughter Leslie Browne\, who went on to become a principal dancer with New York’s American Ballet Theatre\, portrays herself in the film. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Classic Film: The Razor’s Edge
DESCRIPTION:The Razor’s Edge is the first film version of W. Somerset Maugham’s 1944 novel. A Darryl F. Zanuck production\, it was released in 1946 and stars Tyrone Power\, Gene Tierney\, John Payne\, Anne Baxter\, Clifton Webb\, Herbert Marshall\, supporting cast Lucile Watson\, Frank Latimore and Elsa Lanchester. Marshall plays Somerset Maugham. The film was directed by Edmund Goulding. The book’s epigraph reads\, “The sharp edge of a razor is difficult to pass over; thus the wise say the path to enlightenment is hard\,” taken from a verse in the Katha-Upanishad.” \nThe Maugham best-seller\, in which Maugham himself is a character in the story\, is beautifully brought to life as a film classic\, which questions society’s values. This intriguing tale centers on a soul-searching World War I veteran (Power) who finds he cannot settle back into the world of the upper class. Shunning his planned marriage and conventional career\, he travels abroad to seek a more meaningful and enlightened life\, and causes his distraught fiancee (Tierney) to seek solace with another man (Payne). \nMaugham wrote the part of Isabel with his friend Gene Tierney in mind. Zanuck wanted Tyrone Power to star and delayed final casting until Power finished his service in the Marines in January 1946. \n20th Century Fox had purchased the film rights from Maugham in March 1945 for $50\,000 (equivalent to approximately $654\,991) plus 20% of the film’s net profits. The contract stipulated that Maugham would receive an additional $50\,000 if the film did not start shooting by February 2\, 1946. Therefore\, in August 1945\, producer Darryl F. Zanuck had the second unit begin shooting in the mountains around Denver\, Colorado\, which were to portray the Himalayas in the film. \nThe film was nominated for multiple Academy Award\, including Best Picture. Anne Baxter won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress; she and Clifton Webb both won Golden Globes for their performances.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to weather. \nDunaway Center\, 23 School Street \nIn “Dead Poets Society\,” Director Peter Weir (and screenwriter Tom Schulman) offer a touching private-school requiem for free thinking. Robin Williams gives arguably his best performance as the English teacher — who seeks to inspire individual creativity in his students\, and to show them that “somewhere among the three Rs is an immensely pleasurable P for poetry.” – The Washington Post \nPainfully shy Todd Anderson has been sent to the school where his popular older brother was valedictorian. His room-mate\, Neil\, although exceedingly bright and popular\, is very much under the thumb of his overbearing father. The two\, along with their other friends\, meet Professor Keating\, their new English teacher\, who tells them of the Dead Poets Society\, and encourages them to go against the status quo. Each\, in their own way\, does this\, and are changed for life. \nDead Poets Society won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay (Tom Schulman). Peter Weir received a nomination for Best Director and the film itself was nominated for Best Picture of 1989. Robin Williams received his second Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination and it has since been widely recognized as one of the actor/comedian’s best roles. It also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: Murder on the Orient Express
DESCRIPTION:Based on the 1934 mystery best-seller by Agatha Christie\, this stylish film stars Albert Finney (as Hercule Poirot\,) Lauren Bacall\, and the fabulous Orient Express itself\, – the elegant train carrying passengers in luxury and comfort from Istanbul to Calais. Joining them aboard is “the greatest cast of suspicious characters ever involved in murder\,” including Ingrid Bergman\, Jacqueline Bisset\, Sean Connery\, John Gielgud\, Wendy Hiller\, Anthony Perkins\, Vanessa Redgrave\, Richard Widmark\, and Michael York. \nEn route to Calais\, the fabled train is brought to a standstill by a snow slide in the Balkans. Its passengers include royalty\, the wealthy\, and the infamous.\, one of whom is murdered. The famous\, Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is also aboard\, and is begged by the owner of the line to solve the crime before the tracks are cleared and Yugoslav police become involved. \nAgatha Christie herself was once stranded on the Orient Express when the tracks were washed away in a mudslide. Her letters include descriptions of her fellow passengers\, who influenced the plot and characters of the book. At the center of Dame Agatha’s plot is the kidnapping of three-year-old heiress\, Daisy Armstrong\, an episode which the author based on the actual kidnapping/murder case of Charles Lindbergh’s infant son in 1932. \nDirected by Sidney Lumet\, the film richly evokes the era of Europe in the thirties\, and received six Academy Award nominations\, with Ingrid Bergman winning as Best Supporting Actress.

DESCRIPTION:*Waltz King Johann Strauss’ most popular operetta\, filled with familiar songs and waltzes; \n*Sumptuous production by London’s Royal Opera Covent Garden; \n*Evocative of the glittering opulence of Vienna’s Belle Epoque; \n*”A Summit of Escapism” – Daily Telegraph; \n*Free admission and holiday treats. \nKnown as the “Champagne Operetta”\, Die Fledermaus is the most brilliant and popular of any written by the Waltz King\, Johann Strauss. Major opera companies around the world frequently use it as their holiday presentation\, and symphony orchestras do likewise with its overture. \nThis lavish production was filmed for the BBC at a live performance on New Year’s Eve at the Royal Opera\, Covent Garden in London.   Its international cast includes Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Hermann Prey\, with Placido Domingo in the surprising role of conductor. According to the Daily Mail\, “Under (Domingo)\, Strauss’s zestful\, tuneful comedy fizzes along like musical champagne.” \nThe score is filled with familiar waltzes\, polkas and gavottes\, and the scenic design re-creates all the style and opulence of the Viennese Belle Epoque. The Daily Telegraph hailed it as “a summit of escapism!” \nA major part of the operetta occurs at Prince Orlofsky’s masked ball\, at which gaiety and champagne consumption is exceeded only by delightful confusion and mis-adventure. The Prince’s special gala performance party includes some surprise guests\, including Hinge and Bracket\, Charles Aznavour\, and the stars of the Royal Ballet\, Merle Park and Wayne Eagling\, performing a pas de deux especially choreographed for the occasion by Sir Frederick Ashton. \nDie Fledermaus was completed in 1874. Strauss was in his late forties\, the darling of Vienna for his celebrated waltzes. The operetta was his third attempt to compose a successful stage work. Cutting himself off from the world\, he completed the whole score in 43 days – a score of which nearly every bar is memorable and stamped with his own personality. With Die Fledermaus\, Strauss seems to have captured for us Vienna — an ideal\, laughing Vienna — and preserved it\, living\, in his music. This is the city as it liked to be in the third quarter of the nineteenth century.

A member of the piano faculty of Boston Conservatory and MIT\, Miss Weber’s concert\, entitled “Fire and Ice”\, features the works of Prokofiev\, Hindemith\, Kapustin\, and one of her specialties\, Franz Liszt. \nTime Magazine: “..Few can liberate (Liszt’s) prophetic music ..as masterfully as Janice Weber does here.” \n Tickets are $15 in advance\, $18 at the door\, students $5\, and may be purchased at the Ogunquit Camera Shop\, Ogunquit Welcome Center\, and the Dunaway Center. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.ogunquit.org/shop.php. \nHer world premiere recording of Liszt’s 1838 Transcendental Etudes elicited acclaim from Time Magazine: “Liszt later simplified these pieces into the still ferociously difficult Transcendental Etudes (1852 version) for fear that no one else could play them. There may now be several fire-eating piano virtuosos who can execute the original notes\, but few can liberate the prophetic music they contain as masterfully as Janice Weber does here.” \nA summa cum laude graduate of the Eastman School of Music\, Miss Weber has performed at the White House\, Carnegie Hall\, Wigmore Hall\, National Gallery of Art\, and Boston’s Symphony Hall. She has appeared with the Boston Pops\, Chautauqua Symphony\, New Jersey Symphony\, Hilton Head Orchestra\, Sarajevo Philharmonic\, and Syracuse Symphony in concertos of Hanson\, Sowerby\, Stenhammar\, Bernstein\, and Leroy Anderson as well as the standard repertoire. She has performed at the Bard\, Newport\, La Gesse\, Husum\, and Monadnock summer festivals and has twice toured China under the auspices of the American Liszt Society. \nHer recordings include Rachmaninoff’s complete transcriptions; with the Lydian Quartet\, Leo Ornstein’s vast Piano Quintet; flute and piano works of Sigfrid Karg-Elert; and waltz transcriptions of Godowsky\, Rosenthal\, and Friedman. Miss Weber recorded Liszt’s last Hungarian Rhapsody\, one of only two living pianists to be included in a compendium of historic performances by nineteen legendary artists. DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled due to weather. \nThe Three Faces of Eve\, both a best-selling book and a major motion picture\, is the true story of a young housewife who suffered from multiple personality disorder (MPD). Her psychiatrists\, Corbett H. Thigpen and Hervey M. Cleckley of the Medical College of Georgia (later Georgia Health Sciences University) in Augusta\, published the book in 1957\, and a film adaptation was released that same year. Produced and directed by Nunnally Johnson\, a Georgia native\, the film featured another Georgian\, Joanne Woodward\, in the title role. \nTwentieth Century Fox purchased the film rights to the book at the urging of Nunnally Johnson\, who had obtained the galley proofs in 1956. While the book was still in press\, Johnson convinced the doctors to use the title The Three Faces of Eve and adapted the work as a screenplay. (Thigpen and Cleckley share writing credits for the film.) \nJohnson turned to a relative newcomer to Hollywood\, Joanne Woodward to play the title role. She had appeared in numerous television productions but had only two major movie roles to her credit when she was cast. Johnson considered Woodward’s own Georgia background to be a major asset in playing this fellow southerner. What everyone did agree upon was Joanne Woodward’s superb performance\, in which her masterful changes of facial expression\, voice\, and body language evoke the three personalities. She won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Actress.

SUMMARY:Classic Film:  La Strada
DESCRIPTION:La Strada (The Road) is a 1954 Italian drama directed by Federico Fellini from his own screenplay co-written with Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Flaiano. The film portrays a brutish strongman (Anthony Quinn) and the naïve young woman (Giulietta Masina) whom he buys from her mother and takes with him on the road; encounters with his rival the Fool (Richard Basehart) end with their destruction. \nFellini has called La Strada “a complete catalogue of my entire mythological world\, a dangerous representation of my identity that was undertaken with no precedent whatsoever.” As a result\, the film demanded more time\, effort and suffering than any of his other films\, before or since. The development process was long and tortuous; it was extremely difficult to secure financial backing; casting proved problematic; injuries\, personnel changes and inclement weather disrupted the production schedule more than once; budget shortages constantly plagued the director and his production supervisor\, forcing them to take extraordinary measures to keep going. Finally\, just before shooting was completed\, Fellini suffered a nervous breakdown that necessitated medical treatment in order to complete principal photography. Initial critical reaction was harsh\, and the film’s screening at the Venice Film Festival was the occasion of a bitter controversy that escalated into a public brawl between Fellini’s supporters and detractors. \nSubsequently\, however\, La Strada has become “one of the most influential films ever made”\, according to the American Film Institute. It won the inaugural Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1956. It was placed fourth in the 1992 British Film Institute directors’ list of cinema’s top 10 films.
