It also requires extraordinary technical facility. Weber had all of this in abundance.” Washington Post \nA summa cum laude graduate of the Eastman School of Music\, Janice Weber has performed at the White House\, Carnegie Hall\, Wigmore Hall\, National Gallery of Art\, and Boston’s Symphony Hall. Her interest in the uncommon avenues of the piano literature led to a world premiere recording of Liszt’s 1838 Transcendental Etudes. Time Magazine noted\, “Liszt later simplified these pieces into the still ferociously difficult Transcendental Etudes (1852 version) for fear that no one else could play them. There may now be several fire-eating piano virtuosos who can execute the original notes\, but few can liberate the prophetic music they contain as masterfully as Janice Weber does here.” \nHer recordings include Rachmaninoff’s complete transcriptions; with the Lydian Quartet\, Leo Ornstein’s vast Piano Quintet; flute and piano works of Sigfrid Karg-Elert; and waltz transcriptions of Godowsky\, Rosenthal\, and Friedman. Miss Weber recorded Liszt’s last Hungarian Rhapsody\, one of only two living pianists to be included in a compendium of historic performances by nineteen legendary artists. SUMMARY:"Sing Me Back Home: 100 Years of Country Duets"
DESCRIPTION:Joyce Andersen and Harvey Reid return to Ogunquit Performing Arts\, bringing with them the Knotty Pine Boys All-Star Band to take you on a musical tour of classic American country and folk favorites. \nLocal musical luminaries Joyce Andersen (Vocals/Fiddle) and Harvey Reid (Vocals/Guitar) are known for their wide range of repertoire\, including country\, folk\, blues\, Celtic\, bluegrass\, and ragtime. \nFor this performance\, they are joined by members of the Knotty Pine Boys playng Steel Guitar\, Bass\, and Drums\, a recent combination which has packed in the crowds in local venues. \nJoin us for this rousing evening of family fun and lively\, dynamic music! \nHarvey Reid & Joyce Andersen’s love for classic country music found an outlet when they got together with the Knotty Pine Boys\, a collection of all-star seacoast side-men. Harvey was raised in the south and cut his teeth on the golden oldies of country music and Joyce’s first fiddlin’ gig was with Boston’s late country legend John Lincoln Wright and the Sour Mash Boys which then led her to a year playing country music out of Nashville TN\, riding a tour bus and wearing a cowboy hat. When they get together for a rare Knotty Pine Boys show their love for the music is infectious. \nThey don their western clothing and play hits from the golden era of country music. Songs from Merl Haggard\, Patsy Cline\, George Jones\, Tammy Wynette\, Hank Williams\, Dolly Parton and the like. With their sweet vocal harmonies backed by soaring pedal steel\, spare drums\, bass\, and rockin’ fiddle\, it’s always refreshing to step back in time and spend an evening with this band. \nIf you don’t know Harvey Reid & Joyce Andersen’s music you can ramble around their websites (Joyscream Music & Woodpecker Records) or find them out there on iTunes and the like. They are life long musicians with deeps roots in a wide range of American music. Between the two of them they’ve made over 30 albums ranging from folk & blues to country & Americana and jazz & bluegrass. They have traveled the country and the world playing their original takes on American music as well as their own songs. \nSongwriter\, multi-instrumentalist and music educator Harvey Reid has honed his craft over the last 40 years in countless clubs\, festivals\, streetcorners\, cafes\, schools and concert halls across the nation. He has been called a “giant of the steel strings” and “one of the true treaures of American acoustic music\,” and is considered to be one of the modern masters and innovators of the acoustic guitar\, autoharp and 6-string banjo. He has absorbed a vast repertoire of American contemporary and roots music and woven it into his own colorful\, personal and distinctive style. His 32 recordings on Woodpecker Records showcase his mastery of many instruments and styles of acoustic music\, from hip folk to slashing slide guitar blues to bluegrass\, old-time\, Celtic\, ragtime\, and even classical. \nJoyce Andersen is a veteran musician who has enjoyed a varied 20 year career as side-gal\, session player\, singer-songwriter\, and band leader. Her live shows and recordings showcase her versatility as a vocalist and violinist who thrives on writing and interpreting songs across many genres from old-time\, rock & Americana\, to folk\, pop\, & swing. She started getting critical acclaim and radio play in the folk world with her first full length CD “The Girl I Left Behind” (2000) for it’s songwriting\, breadth of styles and her unique ability to harmonize her vocals with her violin. Her latest CD “SWERVE!” (Oct. 2011)\, marks the invention of her innovative new “violin troubadour” sound which reflects her strengths as an improviser\, and her new found interest in using technology (loops\, effects etc.) to harness new sonic landscapes and launch into extended psychedelic jams. \nTICKETS: $15 in advance; $18 at the door; $5 student. Tickets will go on sale May 1st at the Dunaway Center\, Ogunquit Camera Shop\, Welcome Center\, and Playhouse Downtown Box Office. Tickets also available online through our secure ticket system: \n

SUMMARY:Classic Film: The Last Waltz
DESCRIPTION:The Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian-American rock group the Band\, held on American Thanksgiving Day\, November 25\, 1976\, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. Members of the Band included Rick Danko\, Levon Helm\, Garth Hudson\, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson. \nThe Last Waltz was advertised as the Band’s “farewell concert appearance\,” and the concert saw the Band joined by more than a dozen special guests\, including Bob Dylan\, Paul Butterfield\, Neil Young\, Emmylou Harris\, Ringo Starr\, Ronnie Hawkins\, Dr. John\, Joni Mitchell\, Van Morrison\, Muddy Waters\, Ronnie Wood\, Neil Diamond\, Bobby Charles\, The Staple Singers\, and Eric Clapton. \nThe event was filmed by director Martin Scorsese and made into a documentary of the same name\, released in 1978. The film features concert performances\, intermittent song renditions shot on a studio soundstage\, and interviews by Scorsese with members of the Band. \nThe Last Waltz is hailed as one of the greatest concert films ever made. \nThe Band— Rick Danko on bass\, violin and vocals; Levon Helm on drums\, mandolin and vocals; Garth Hudson on keyboards and saxophone; songwriter Richard Manuel on keyboards\, percussion and vocals; and guitarist\, songwriter and occasional vocalist Robbie Robertson—started out in the late 1950s as a rock and roll band led by Ronnie Hawkins\, and Hawkins himself appears as the first guest. The group backed Bob Dylan in the 1960s\, and Dylan performs with the Band toward the end of the concert. The musical director for the concert was the Band’s original record producer\, John Simon. \nThe film begins with the Band performing the last song of the evening\, their cover version of the Marvin Gaye hit “Don’t Do It”. The film then flashes back to the beginning of the concert\, and follows it more or less chronologically. \nThe live songs are interspersed with studio segments and interviews conducted by director Scorsese in which the Band’s members reminisce about the group’s history. Robertson talks about Hudson joining the band on the condition that the other members pay him $10 a week each for music lessons. The classically trained Hudson could then tell his parents that he was a music teacher instead of merely a rock and roll musician. Robertson also describes the surreal experience of playing in a burnt-out nightclub owned by Jack Ruby. \nManuel recalls that some of the early names for the Band included “the Honkies\,” and “the Crackers.” Because they were simply referred to as “the band” by Dylan and their friends and neighbors in Woodstock\, New York\, they figured that was just what they would call themselves. \nA recurring theme brought up in the interviews with Robertson is that the concert marks an end of an era for the Band\, that after 16 years on the road\, it is time for a change. “That’s what The Last Waltz is: sixteen years on the road. The numbers start to scare you\,” Robertson tells Scorsese. “I mean\, I couldn’t live with twenty years on the road. I don’t think I could even discuss it.” \nAdmission\, parking\, and popcorn are free.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: 12 O’Clock High
DESCRIPTION:Twelve O’Clock High is a 1949 American war film about aircrews in the United States Army’s Eighth Air Force who flew daylight bombing missions against Nazi Germany and occupied France\, during the early days of American involvement in World War II.   It stars Gregory Peck\, Dean Jagger\, Gary Merrill\, Hugh Marlowe and Millard Mitchell. \nThe film follows the progress of a young general (Peck) who\, toward the end of 1942\, takes command of a bomber group operating from a base in England\, and elevates it from a bleak combat record and low morale to a peak of aggressiveness and pride by pushing the limits of “maximum effort” and human endurance. \nThe film features actual war footage of attacking fighter planes\, and vividly portrays the terrible tension of bomber crews under fire\, their relief on a safe return\, and their horrendous summoning of enough resolve to fly these missions every day. \n“… one of the first and arguably the greatest of the Hollywood films to examine the pressures of command and psychological toll of making life and death decisions…” Sean Axmaker\, TCM \nTwelve O’Clock High was directed by Henry King and produced by Darryl F. Zanuck. It marked a turning away from the optimistic\, morale-boosting style of wartime films and toward a grittier realism that dealt more directly with the human costs of war. \nIt was filmed on Air Force Bases in the United States\, and at the RAF Barford St. John airfield in Oxfordshire\, England. \nThe film is based on the novel by Sy Bartlett and Beirne Lay\, Jr.\, with screenplay by the authors. Bartlett and Lay drew on their own wartime experiences with Eighth Air Force bomber units. At the Eighth Air Force headquarters\, Bartlett had worked closely with Colonel Armstrong\, who was the primary model for the leading character. The film’s 918th Bomber Group was modeled primarily on the 306th\, because that group remained a significant part of the Eighth Air Force throughout the war in Europe. \nFree Admission\, Parking\, and Popcorn

SUMMARY:Classic Film: List of Adrian Messenger
DESCRIPTION:This 1963 black and white crime mystery features George C. Scott as a retired British intelligence officer as he\, (together with an old friend\, a World War II counterpart in the French Resistance)\, investigates a series of apparently unrelated deaths and the list that ties these crimes together. Set in the fog-enshrouded streets and estates of England\, the atmospheric film was directed by John Huston from a screenplay by Anthony Veiller\, based on the 1959 novel of the same title by Philip MacDonald. \nThe film also stars Kirk Douglas\, Dana Wynter\, Clive Brook\, Jacques Roux\, and Herbert Marshall. Several of the bit characters are played by famous stars in heavy makeup\, and each of these stars — Burt Lancaster\, Robert Mitchum\, Frank Sinatra\, and Tony Curtis — “unmasks” in the epilogue. \nAdrian Messenger (John Merivale) asks his friend\, British colonel Anthony Gethryn (George C. Scott)\, to check on the whereabouts of the eleven men named on a written list. Not long afterward\, the plane on which Messenger is travelling is deliberately blown up. The mystery killer evidently slipped the bomb on the plane while disguised as a priest\, and we soon learn that the killer adopts a different guise for each of his subsequent murders. \nThe List of Adrian Messenger is a race-against-time thriller in which Colonel Gethryn has to work out who the victims are\, and why\, and identify the killer and stop him. It’s beautifully written and well-portrayed. \nBy the time he wrote The List of Adrian Messenger\, Philip MacDonald was a writer fully in command of his craft with almost half a century of experience\, and it shows in both the book and the film. This is a taut\, expertly plotted thriller with evocative locations\, memorable characters and a compelling villain. \nAdmission\, parking\, and popcorn are free.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: Marnie
DESCRIPTION:Marnie is a 1964 psychological thriller produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The screenplay by Jay Presson Allen was based on the 1961 novel of the same name by Winston Graham. The film stars Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery. \nOne year after she appeared as Melanie Daniels in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller\, The Birds\, actress Tippi Hedren took on another Hitchcock role in this unusual psychological drama. Marnie Edgars (Hedren) is a scheming young woman who repeatedly finds employment as a secretary and then proceeds to rob her employers. \nThough she changes her disguise\, her new boss Mark Rutland (Sean Connery) recognizes her. Mark proves to be a bit unusual himself. Instead of reporting her to the police\, he is intrigued by her criminal behavior–as well as her bizarre aversion to touch. He slowly discovers the events in Marnie’s past that have caused her antisocial behavior. \nAlfred Hitchcock originally wanted Grace Kelly to make her screen comeback in the title role\, but the people of Monaco were not happy with the idea of their princess playing a compulsive thief.   After Grace Kelly turned him down\, Hitchcock considered and then rejected these actresses for the title role of “Marnie”: Eva Marie Saint\, Lee Remick\, Vera Miles\, Claire Griswold\, and Susan Hampshire.   Paul Newman was offered the role of Mark Rutland\, but wasn’t interested. He did star in Hitchcock’s ‘s next film Torn Curtain (1966). \nIn a 1960 article called “Why I Am Afraid of the Dark”\, Hitchcock noted “…it’s because I liked Edgar Allan Poe’s stories so much that I began to make suspense films.” \nHitchcock put Edgar Allan Poe references throughout this film. Marnie’s last name is Edgar. (In the novel\, Marnie’s last name is Elmer.) Like Poe’s characters\, Marnie Edgar is subject to psychological terror. The film takes place in New York (Strutt’s office)\, Virginia (Garrod’s Stables) and Philadelphia (Rutland Publishing and Wickwind). These are the three places that Edgar Allan Poe lived throughout the better part of his life. The film’s climactic scene takes place at Marnie’s mother’s home in Baltimore\, the city where Poe died under mysterious circumstances in 1849. \nAdmission\, parking and popcorn are free.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: Once More\, With Feeling
DESCRIPTION:Yul Brynner and Kay Kendall star in this hilarious and successful 1960 cinematic version of the stage comedy by Harry Kurnitz. Brynner is a flamboyant symphony conductor with tremendous talent and ego to match. He spares no one in his relentless pursuit of musical perfection\, while his elegant but giddy wife (Kay Kendall) scampers in his wake\, mending fences with offended musicians\, agents\, orchestra managers\, and donors. \nThis is a capricious romp through the chaotic life of a symphony orchestra\, set against the music of Liszt\, Beethoven\, and Wagner\, and given first class treatment throughout.   A British comedy film\, Once More\, With Feeling is directed and produced by Stanley Donen\, and features brilliant supporting actors Gregory Ratoff and Geoffrey Toone. The screenplay was written by Harry Kurnitz\, based on his play. Costumes for Kay Kendall were designed by Givenchy. \nYul Brynner was already an established star when he made this picture\, bringing to his role both a commanding presence\, impressive theatrical experience\, and musical talent.   In addition to his work as a director and performer\, Brynner was an active photographer and wrote two books. He was also an accomplished guitarist. In his early period in Europe he often played and sang gypsy songs in Parisian nightclubs with Aliosha Dimitrievitch. He sang some of those same songs in the film “The Brothers Karamazov. ” In 1967 he and Dimitrievitch released a record album The Gypsy and I: Yul Brynner Sings Gypsy Songs (Vanguard VSD 79265). \nThe vivacious and witty actress Kay Kendall was most prolific in British films\, but also achieved popularity with American audiences\, winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her role in the musical-comedy film “Les Girls”(1957). Educated in Wales\, Scotland and London\, she studied ballet for six years in London\, joining a chorus line while still in her early teens. A vibrant and successful film career followed. \nThe play Once More\, With Feeling which was adapted for this film\, opened on Broadway on 21 October 1958 at the National Theatre\, in a production directed by George Axelrod\, designed by George Jenkins\, and starring Joseph Cotten\, Arlene Francis\, and Walter Matthau\, who was nominated for a Tony Award as best featured actor. \nAdmission\, parking\, and popcorn are free

SUMMARY:Portland Ballet: The Victorian Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:As a holiday treat\, dancers from the Portland Ballet will perform excerpts from their production of Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet. This representation of about a dozen dancers\, will appear in full costume in selections from the Ballet’s complete production of “The Victorian Nutcracker”\, (which opens in the Portland area the following week.) \nThe dancers will also provide an up-close demonstration of their dance classes and barre work with commentary\, as a part of their presentation.   CHILDREN ARE WELCOME\, and may be invited from the audience to chat with the dancers and try out a few dance steps. \nOPA is delighted to welcome Portland Ballet back to Ogunquit! \nFollowing the presentations of his ballets “Swan Lake” and “Sleeping Beauty”\, Tchaikovsky was commissioned by the Direction of the Imperial Opera to compose a double-bill program featuring both an opera and a ballet. Alexandre Dumas Père’s adaptation of the story by E.T.A. Hoffmann was set to music by Tchaikovsky and originally choreographed by Marius Petipa. \nIn the spring of 1891\, while on his way from Moscow to New York – where he was to conduct at the grand opening of Carnegie Hall – Tchaikovsky became acquainted with a new instrument that enchanted him with its “divinely beautiful tone.” Inventd by a noted French instrument maker\, Victor Mustel\, it had been patented as the “celesta” after its heavenly timbre. Tchaikovsky arranged to have one sent to Russia in secret\, for he was afraid other composers “will get hold of it and use its unusual effects before me. I expect this new insrument will produce a colossal sensation.” \nThe first concert presentation of “The Nutcracker” in 1892 was a great success\, although the ballet itself took considerably longer to take hold. Over the years\, however\, the Sugar Plum Fairy\, and the music of the celesta to which she danced\, has ensured “The Nutcracker” as the favorite Christmas presentation of ballet companies around the world. \nSteeped in tradition\, Portland Ballet’s annual production of “The Victorian Nutcracker” recreates the interiors of  Victoria Mansion and interprets Tchaikovsky’s score through the stories of Portland’s nineteenth-century families. This audience favorite is unique among Nutcracker performances across the nation and continues to be a mainstay of Portland’s winter arts season\, presented December 12 and 13 at Westbrook Performing Arts Center\, and December 16 at Merrill Auditorium. \nFMI: www.portlandballet.org \nA reception with refreshments will follow the performance. \nTICKETS are $5 per person at the door.   No advance sales.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: A Child's Christmas in Wales
DESCRIPTION:It’s Christmas Eve in Wales. A young boy named Thomas is excited about the holiday\, but he’s also disappointed because it’s raining instead of snowing. His grandfather gives him an old snow globe as an early Christmas present and starts telling colorful\, amusing stories about his childhood Christmases that are shown in flashback. \nThe film is based on A Child’s Christmas in Wales\, a prose work by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Originally emerging from a piece written for radio\, it was recorded by Thomas in 1952. The story is an anecdotal retelling of a Christmas from the view of a young child and is a romanticized version of Christmases past\, portraying a nostalgic and simpler time. It is one of Thomas’s most popular works. \nAn original movie made for PBS and winner of 11 major film awards\, A Child’s Christmas in Wales was called “picture-perfect” by the New York Times\, and “a genuine holiday classic” by the Chicago Tribune.   The film stars Denholm Elliott\, Mathonwy Reeves\, and Glynis Davies. Directed by Don McBrearty\, it was adapted from the Thomas book by Jon Glascoe and Peter Kreutzer. \nIt was filmed on location in Montgomery Wales\, which is probably little changed from when Dylan Thomas was a boy in Swansea. The story is told from the viewpoint of the author recounting a festive season as a young boy in a fictionalized autobiographical style. In the first passage Thomas searches for a nostalgic Western belief in Christmas past with the line\, It was snowing. It was always snowing at Christmas. He furthers the idyllic memory of childhood past by describing the snow as being better and more exciting than the snow that is experienced as an adult. \nThomas recorded the story in 1952. Although the recording sold modestly at first\, it became his most popular prose work in America. It was a 2008 selection for the United States National Recording Registry\, stating it is “credited with launching the audiobook industry in the United States.” \nAdmission\, parking\, and popcorn are free.

SUMMARY:Classic Film: To Kill A Mockingbird
DESCRIPTION:The 1962 American drama film\, To Kill A Mockingbird\, is often considered to be one of the greatest films ever made.   The film is based on the novel by Harper Lee published in 1960.  The book was immediately successful\, winning the Pulitzer Prize\, and has become a classic of modern American literature. The plot and characters are loosely based on the author’s observations of her family and neighbors\, as well as on an event that occurred near her hometown in 1936\, when she was 10 years old. \nTo Kill A Mockingbird was directed by Robert Mulligan\, with screenplay by Horton Foote.   The film is set in a small Alabama town in the Depression-era South in the 1930s. Lawyer Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) defends a black man against an undeserved rape charge\, and his children against prejudice.   Finch is a scrupulously honest and highly respected lawyer\, a role Gregory Peck interprets to perfection. The trial and surrounding events are seen through the eyes of Finch’s six-year-old daughter Scout (Mary Badham.) To Kill A Mockingbird carries its audience on an odyssey through the fires of prejudice and injustice in 1932 Alabama\, This process exposes Scout and her brother Jem to the evils of racism and stereotyping. \nThe film’s cast includes child actors Mary Badham and Philip Alford as Scout and Jem\, and John Megna as Dill\, (a character modeled on Harper Lee’s childhood friend\, Truman Capote.) The film also features wonderful performances by Brock Peters\, Rosemary Murphy\, William Windom\, Frank Overton\, and Robert Duvall\, who delivers a stunning performance as the Finch’s ominous neighbor. \nTo Kill a Mockingbird was a huge box office success\, earning more than 10 times its budget and an overwhelmingly positive response from critics. It won three Academy Awards\, including Best Actor for Peck\, and was nominated for a total of eight. Previous to being turned into a film\, the book had been translated into more than 40 languages\, sold more than 30 million copies worldwide\, and was voted one of the best novels of the 20th century by U.S. librarians. \nAdmission\, parking and popcorn are free. \n

As a member of the band\, I played on most of the songs\, and was lucky enough to be featured in a solo performance of my own song\, “The Rising Moon”. \nIn his solo performances\, he creates a relaxed and intimate feeling with his audience through his pleasant and quirky observations about music and life. He’s performed among the dunes of the Negev Desert\, in Leonard Bernstein’s living room and on the stages of many of the world’s finest concert halls. He has also performed with some legendary orchestras\, such as the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy\, the Boston Pops under both Arthur Fiedler and Keith Lockhardt and several regional orchestras. \nAs a jazz player he has worked in some of New York’s most prestigious clubs\, including Sweet Basil\, The Village Vanguard\, and Bradley’s. He has played with a wide variety of jazz masters from Benny Goodman to Tommy Flanagan\, as well as Red Mitchell\, Lou Donaldson\, George Mraz\, Gerry Hemingway and many other luminaries. His 15 CDs have sold over 300 thousand copies and have won 3 Indie Awards. SUMMARY:25th Annual Capriccio: Tim Sample
DESCRIPTION:The Maine Sunday Telegram referred to Tim as “Maine’s high prince of comedy…a one-man humor factory!” A concert by Tim Sample always guarantees a refreshing evening of laughter and fun for all ages. \nTim Sample\, the noted Maine humorist\, recorded his first comedy album in 1979. Since that start he has released many more albums and videos\, written/and or illustrated over a dozen books\, and brought Maine and his own brand of humor to the country at large through his 11 years as a regular correspondent on CBS Sunday Morning. “Yep” you might say “but what’s he done lately?” \nOn July 1st\, 2015 Stephen King announced in the New York Times the exclusive release of his new Audiobook “Drunken Fireworks” which Tim narrated in a “flawless Yankee accent” with regionalisms like “rud” for “road” and “pitcher” for “picture”…“I can hear that voice in my head because I’ve been listening to it my whole life\,” according to King. \nThroughout the summer Tim will be very busy promoting and signing the audiobook along with his ever on-going performance schedule. \nTim’s weekly column “Stories I Never Told You” turned out to be an excellent creative outlet for him and In 2013 it earned a First Place award from the Maine Press Association and in 2014 a collection of columns entitled “Answers to Questions Nobody was Askin’” was published by Down East Books. The audiobook version is in the works. \nTo quote The Reporter of North Conway\, NH: “Humorists such as Tim Sample…are doctors of the human soul. These are the ones…who keep our world whole.” \nFor more information on Tim visit his web-site: www.timsample.com \nTickets are $15 when purchased in advance\, $18 at the door\, and $5 for students\, available at: Ogunquit Welcome Center\, Ogunquit Camera Shop\, and the Dunaway Center. \nOnline Tickets available at: www.ogunquit.org/shop.php \nOPA is a not-for-profit\, tax exempt\, all-volunteer committee of the Town of Ogunquit\, Maine \nBack to Capriccio Calendar of Events

SUMMARY:Boston Chamber Music
DESCRIPTION:  \n21st ANNUAL CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL\nThe Ogunquit Performing Arts 21st Annual Chamber Music Festival includes Boston Chamber Music on Friday\, June 5 and The Cascabel Piano Trio on Saturday\, June 6 \nFriday\, June 5: Ogunquit’s favorite Boston Chamber Music returns for its 16th year of opening the Festival. Clarinetist and Artistic Director Thomas Hill continues to bring together the finest ensembles for this concert\, this year featuring mezzo-soprano\, flute\, and piano performing the works of Mozart\, Heiss\, Trimble\, Ravel\, and Saint-Saëns. \nSince the inception of Ogunquit Performing Art’s Chamber Music Festival in June of 1998\, there have been\, in all but two of the intervening years\, appearances of an ensemble offered under the rubric Boston Chamber Music. In reality\, the only annual consistent artist-members of that ‘ensemble’ have been pianist\, Randall Hodgkinson and clarinetist Thomas Hill — who has acted as the artistic director of the presentations.    The concerts’ participants\, however\, have been drawn heavily (though not exclusively) from guest-artist forces derived from the acclaimed Boston Chamber Music Society (of which Mr. Hodgkinson and Mr. Hill were founding members) and also members of the Boston Philharmonic of which Mr. Hill is principal clarinetist. \nThis year’s ensemble will include Mr. Hill\, Mr. Hodgkinson\, Kathleen Boyd\, flutist\, and D’Anna Fortunato\, Mezzo-soprano. \nTHE PROGRAM: \nParto parto ma tu ben mio soprano from La Clemenza di Tito by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart;\nLa Flûte Enchantée for soprano\, flute and piano by Maurice Ravel;\nUne Flûte Invisible for soprano\, flute and piano by Camille Saint-Saëns;\nSonata in g minor for flute and keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach;\nFour Fragments from the Canterbury Tales for soprano\, flute\, clarinet and keyboard by Lester Trimble;\nFive Songs from James Joyce by James Joyce for soprano\, clarinet and piano by the eminent Boston composer\, John Heiss. Mr. Heiss expected to be present in the audience.\nSonata for Clarinet and Piano by Leonard Bernstein \nPrincipal Clarinetist of The Boston Philharmonic since 1992\, THOMAS HILL was also founding clarinetist of the acclaimed Boston Chamber Music Society and a member of that ensemble from 1983 until 2010. He has appeared on innumerable concert and festival series\, and has been widely engaged as soloist and ensemble performer under a variety of auspices since the beginning of his career in New York and Los Angeles. \nMr. Hill has also served as principal clarinetist of The New Haven Symphony\, The Long Beach Symphony\, The Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra of Boston\, The Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra\, The San Diego Symphony\, and The Cascade Festival Orchestra in Oregon. He has appeared with both The Boston Symphony and The Boston Pops. \n“Hill’s performance was what we’ve come to expect from him –- beautifully controlled\, technically strong\, imaginative and musical.” The Boston Globe. \n…”among the best clarinetists anywhere.”   The Boston Musical Intelligencer \nRANDALL HODGKINSON\, pianist\, has achieved recognition as a winner of the International American Music Competition for pianists sponsored by the the Rockefeller Foundation. He has appeared frequently as soloist and chamber music artist in festivals throughout the United States\, and as a featured soloist with major orchestras including those of Philadelphia\, Atlanta\, Buffalo\, the American Symphony\, the Orchestra of Illinois and abroad in Italy and Iceland. His solo debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra was presented both in Boston and at Carnegie Hall. \nMr. Hodgkinson studied at The Curtis Institute and the New England Conservatory. He has been an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society since 1983. While a member of Boston Musica Viva\, he performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. \nFlutist KATHLEEN BOYD performs actively in Boston and throughout New England. She is the principal flutist of the Boston Philharmonic and Symphony New Hampshire. In addition\, she is a member of the Rhode Island Philharmonic\, and has performed frequently and toured nationally with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra. \nPerformances include the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras\, Portland Symphony\, Alea III\, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra\, Landmarks Orchestra\, Emmanuel Music\, Cantata Singers\, New Hampshire\, Albany\, Granite State orchestras and others. She has participated in the Festivals at Tanglewood\, Bach Aria\, Grand Teton\, Sandpoint\, Monadnock\, Operafestival di Roma\, Newport\, RI\, VentiCordi in Kennebunkport\, ME and the Bach Festival in North Conway\, NH.\nGrammy nominated mezzo soprano\, D’ANNA FORTUNATO\, is widely considered to be one of America’s premier Concert/Oratorio singers\, while having established herself as a respected Operatic Artist as well. She has been a repeat soloist with North America’s finest Choral Organizations and Bach Festivals (Bach Aria Group member for 12 years and the Mezzo-Soprano Annual Soloist with the American Schubert Institute from 1991-2005).   She has appeared as a soloist in concerts with top major symphony orchestras\, including the New York Philharmonic\, The Boston Symphony\, the Philadelphia Orchestra\, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, the San Francisco Symphony\, the New Japan Philharmonic\, Ottawa’s National Arts Center Orchestra\, and the orchestras of Dallas\, Houston\, Minnesota\, Cleveland\, Rochester\, and New Jersey. \n  \n\n\nFAMOUS COMPOSER TO ATTEND OPA OPENING NIGHT (Read More…)

SUMMARY:Classic Film: In Harm’s Way
DESCRIPTION:In Harm’s Way is a 1965 American epic naval war film produced and directed by Otto Preminger and starring John Wayne\, Kirk Douglas\, Patricia Neal\, Tom Tryon\, Paula Prentiss\, Stanley Holloway\, Burgess Meredith\, Brandon DeWilde\, Jill Haworth\, Dana Andrews\, and Henry Fonda. The screenplay was based on the novel Harm’s Way by James Bassett. \nThe film recounts the lives of several US naval officers and their wives or lovers while based in Hawaii as the US involvement in World War II begins. The title of the film comes from a quote from American Revolutionary naval hero John Paul Jones: “I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast\, for I intend to go in harm’s way.” \nAdmission\, parking\, and popcorn are free. \nThe book\, Harm’s Way\, is the definitive Admiral’s novel. The author\, James Bassett\, was a Public Affairs officer on Admiral “Bull” Halsey’s staff during WWII and his observations of that period are the basis for this novel. \nThe film presents a relatively unromanticized and realistic picture of the American Navy and its officers in the period before and shortly after the start of World War II\, complete with bureaucratic infighting among the brass and sometimes disreputable private acts by individuals. \nIn Harm’s Way\, was indeed an epic undertaking and Preminger was able to count on the US Defense Department for practically everything he needed in order to recreate the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and other combat scenes. The U.S. Navy “supplied him with the USS St. Paul\, a cruiser\, and sailed the entire cast and crew from Seattle to Hawaii. On the way Preminger shot a number of the onboard scenes\, ordering the St. Paul’s captain and crew around as if they were employees. The naval base at Pearl Harbor became a Preminger set…” (Jeff Stafford for TCM) \nIn Harm’s Way\, starring John Wayne\, Kirk Douglas\, Patricia Neal\, and Henry Fonda.  Free Admission.
